After the release of ‘Slowcoach’ in April, which was added to three Apple Music editorial playlists and described as “an engrossing jam unlike any other… Messy Eater oozes fun and creativity” (Plastic Mag) and “a genre-melting joyride” (Unrecorded), Messy Eater continues to tease his forthcoming ‘Southern Fried’ EP with its second single ‘On The Right Track’.
Once again inspired by the playful sampling adventures of The Avalanches and The Dust Brothers’ production on Beastie Boys’ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ and Beck’s ‘Odelay’, ‘On The Right Track’ combines twinkling 70s electric piano, 90s hip hop beats, brass stabs and dusty soul vocals in Messy Eater’s colourful, genre-blending style. The atmosphere is initially intimate with Messy Eater reflecting “the path of life is no Roman road / spaghetti junctions and contraflows” before lifting off with a life-affirming chorus “don’t you worry about me / I’ve been taking my time / I’m on the right track, baby”.
Messy Eater is the brand new music and illustration project from Pete Bott, whose previous projects have been supported by NME, The Guardian, Notion and BBC Radio 1. Only launching at the end of 2024, Messy Eater has already been invited to perform a live session for BBC Introducing and has received support for his debut EP ‘Starters’ from Apple Music, Amazing Radio and numerous press tastemakers. Drawing comparisons with Gorillaz, Beck, The Flaming Lips and The Avalanches, Messy Eater combines the flavours of wry lyrical observations on modern life with irresistible hooks and a unique self-produced sound.
