ARTIST: MESSY EATER
TRACK: WORK LIFE BALANCE
DATE: 10 JANUARY 2025
LABEL: NUTRITIOUS SOUNDS
New music and illustration artist Messy Eater releases grooving alternative earworm ‘Work Life Balance’, the third single from debut ‘Starters’ EP, on Nutritious Sounds on 10 January.
Messy Eater is the brand new music and illustration project from Pete Bott, whose previous projects have been supported by NME, The Guardian, Notion and BBC Radio 1.
‘Work Life Balance’ rides a driving new wave synth bass and drum machine groove reminiscent of ‘Speaking In Tongues’-era Talking Heads or Soulwax remixes. A Prince ‘Kiss’-style filtergate guitar locks with the rhythm section to underpin deadpan, observational lyrics about the daily work grind: “My life’s ambition is to be busy / busier than you / I’m buying things I don’t even want or use”. The track is then propelled into an infectiously catchy chorus refrain: “You work baby so hard / but tell me who’s got the money”.
Growing up on a diet of mixtape culture and genre-agnostic electicism, Messy Eater lives in a world of "anything goes" melodic songwriting and kaleidoscopic sampledelica. Drawing comparisons with Gorillaz, Beck, Talking Heads and The Avalanches, Messy Eater combines the flavours of wry lyrical observations on modern life with irresistible hooks and a unique self-produced sound.
The debut Messy Eater single, ‘Feels Good’, was described as “vibrant sonic cuisine... boundary-dissolving alchemy” (Sinusoidal Music) and "mixtape culture meets genre-bending songwriting... with irresistible hooks" (Lost In The Manor).
Second single, ‘I’m A Mess Right Now’, was described as “infectiously catchy and highly original” (Plastic Magazine) and “delightfully chaotic and playful…brilliant” (Unrecorded).
‘Work Life Balance’ is the third track from Messy Eater’s forthcoming debut EP ‘Starters’.
